Web Hosting Talk FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

Why can't I use the PM or E-mail features?

Please review Forum Guidelines. We have minimum post restrictions in place before you can access certain board features. Please review Forum Guidelines.

Why am I receiving offers in my PM box?

Because a member has decided to disregard forum rules and SPAM you.

Please report unsolicited offers by using the REPORT button in the upper-right of the Private Message to alert moderators. PM SPAM is not tolerated on WHT. But if you don't report it, the SPAMMER just keeps SPAMMING.

Thank you for reporting SPAMMERS!

Why can't I post a URL?

Please review Forum Guidelines. We have minimum post restrictions in place before you can access certain board features.

What are the WHT Staff titles and what do they mean?

The Community Leaders are responsible for the overall management of the community and have vBulletin Administrator access. Community Leaders have moderation control over all the forums. The Community Leaders also help develop the overall 'Community Policies' and direction of the board.

The Community Liaisons are forum-specific moderators and are hand picked from applications we have received. They are dedicated to managing a specific forum or set of forums within the community. They do not have vBulletin Administrator access or forum-wide moderation control. However, they can easily escalate issues to Community Leaders as required.

The Community Guides are primarily to help guide discussions and keep them on topic without the need for moderator intervention. They are not moderators, but they report problems when they see them. Future Liaisons will be chosen from the Guide group. However, not all Guides will or want to become Liaisons. To be a Community Guide, you need to be an example to the community with your contributions, helpfulness, and attitudes. You're active in the community, you work well as part of a team, and you stay within the forum guidelines.

The Community Liaison 2.0 group are Liaisons that moderate all forums, as well as take on some advanced moderator rolls. They're responsible for monitoring signatures and other profile fields. And are the first line of action when Liaisons need assistance.

The Content Curator group are members who help in drawing out content by Tweeting, contributing to Forum Thread Summaries, and elsewhere to bring relevant, topical, and compeling threads and posts to the forefront.

The Retired Moderators are members who volunteered their time to moderate WHT sometime between July 2004 and now. Although we recognize the efforts of those who moderated before, we have chosen to restrict this group to members we have knowledge of. Life happens, and they're not actively moderating now. We appreciate what they've done and their continued support. Some moderators choose not to be in the Retired Moderators group after they retire.

The iNET Interactive group is compiled of iNET staff that need access to certain forum features. They are not involved in the moderating of WHT.

Any other titles are not related to the inside workings of WHT.

What are "points" and "warnings?"

WebHostingTalk uses an automated system of warnings when members fail to follow or acknowledge Forum Guidelines.

Infractions earn points for a specified period of time. Once a member reaches the banning threshold (30 points), their account is disabled until enough points expire.

When a warning is issued, an email is dispatched laying out the infraction, points assessed, days points expire, and how to appeal any such warning.

It is the goal of the warning system to encourage members to review, understand, and follow Forum Guidelines.

If you find any section of our Guidelines confusing, please open a ticket and ask for clarification.

Why has a word been replaced with stars (****)?

Words that have been replaced with ******* have been censored by WHT Forum Administration. These are generally common curse words that are not suitable for a family safe web site. It is common to replace company names or URLs with stars when they become problematic.

We don't take censorship of company names or URLs lightly. They are only added to the censor list when it becomes too time consuming to moderate them. It is no reflection on a company's ability to provide a service. It is a reflection of how they or their clients, co-workers or affiliates adhere to forum guidelines.

It is against forum guidelines to attempt to defeat forum censors

If you believe a word may be incorrectly censored, please submit a helpdesk ticket to the WHT staff so we can help you.

My IP Address has been blocked. What does this mean?

An IP address is a unique identifier for an individual session on the internet. Sometimes this address changes when you disconnect and reconnect (usually with dialup connections).

If we have blocked your IP address there is always a very good reason. Typically users "spamming" the boards or being intentionally disruptive by creating multiple user names cause IP blocking. Sometimes this results in entire IP blocks being banned.

This could mean innocent users are being prohibited from using WHT. We apologise for this inconvenience. If you think your IP has been unfairly blocked, please submit a helpdesk ticket we will assist you in gaining access to the Community.

Can WHT Moderators help with other Informa forums?

Each Informa forum has its own unique set of moderators and administrators. WebHostingTalk Community Leaders and Liaisons are unable to help with moderation and/or administration of other iNET forums.

Why isn't my post count increasing?

Posts are always counted. However, the total displayed in your profile is dependant upon where you've posted. Some forum categories do not update your profile. This is by design. And in no way reflects the relevancy of posts.

Please see Forum Rules & Guidelines for futher information.

What are the WHT server specs?

Because of security concerns and the several threats made against iNET communities, we cannot disclose exact details of our hosting arrangement with our provider.

Why can't I post in the advertising forums?

Advertising forums are included as a benefit of use by WebHostingTalk members. They require minimum days of membership and profile post count before allowing a new thread posted. Please read the announcement within the forum you wish to post to for further information.

When was WHT founded?

Matt Freeman (MattF on the boards) started hostinvestigator.com, a webhost review site. He then added a forum in 1999 to go along with HostInvestigator so that its visitors would have a place to chat, talk, and message about web hosting.

In 2000, he moved the forum to WebHostingTalk because it had grown into its own entity.

eV1servers (then RackShack) purchased WebHostingTalk from Matt in April, 2002.

WebHostingTalk was sold to iNETinteractive in September 2003. Although iNETinteractive has changed hands since, we remain in their charge.

How do I become a staff member?

WebHostingTalk staff (Community Leaders, Community Liaisons, and Community Guides) are volunteer members who have been chosen because of their overall willingness to help, knowledge of forum guidelines, and representative of good netiquette.

WHT occasionally solicits members by creating a thread in the Feedback forum asking for volunteers or through private invitation.

Further information is included in the What Do Web Hosting Talk Moderators Do? And How Can You Become One? thread.

How can I verify my vBulletin license?

Please submit the following to the helpdesk:

1) License number.
2) Your real name.
3) Your email address.

Include the thread URL and we will update the thread as soon as we receive verification from vBulletin.

Who is this SoftWareRevue dude and how can I get his job?

Dennis (aka SoftWareRevue) has been a member since 2001.

After RackShack purchased WebHostingTalk he was asked to become an administrator in April, 2003 based on his general helpfulness and concern for community.

He quickly earned the title of "Lead Administrator" and has been "running" WHT ever since.

And no - you can't have his job. (it's not as glamorous as you'd think)
