    * [Looking For Suggestion] Backup Service

    Hi All,

Any suggestions for a backup service for a dedicated server? Currently, I am using a managed R1Soft backup service from Soladrive, but my experience is never that great. The latest incident is the worst so far and it's making me look for an alternative or better solution.

    Thank you in advance.

Are you looking for a software or storage space? Also, does your server have a control panel such as cpanel or DirectAdmin?

Have you considered buying a regular VPS or dedicated server and creating for example an SFTP account on it for backups? Most backup software will be compatible, like for example, JetBackup supports SFTP, as does cPanel's built-in backup software, DirectAdmin does with some tweaks and so on.

If you go down that route, make sure to take steps to secure the backup server, i.e. block off any ports that aren't needed, run a full OS update upon initial deployment (not all providers give you an up-to-date OS out-the-box), and ensure you regularly install updates, and of course, use strong and unique passwords. It's important you create a user for the backups and not use root.

There's some decent deals for large storage VPS and dedicated servers to be found. I've seen as low as $5/TB for VPS. Lots of great deals to be found for dedicated as well.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for spending time on this thread.

I am actually looking for a managed service that can fully back up the whole dedicated server for disaster recovery. Currently, all our servers are intended for VoIP service and with Ubuntu 18.x.

    Thanks

Have you looked at Veeam? Must run from Windows Server but free up to 10 servers.

Acronis is better than r1soft. Or you may back up the server using JetBackup + remote backup storage.

There's also an article on DigitalOcean how to setup RAID on Ubuntu 18.04, it's very easy.

RAID is for redundancy, not backups.

If you're relying on RAID instead of doing proper backups, you're setting yourself up for failure.

Have you considered your dedicated server provider? Many offer backup options. Else you could use Restic and an S3-compatible bucket.

If you are looking for just storage, have you checked out Google Drive? We use Drive as a backup location for our cpanel accounts. It's quick and easy to retrieve the backups if you needed them.

You can use the Hetzner Storage Box, but the upload/download speed is a bit slow. However, the price is low, so you can try it.
