UK to Explore Nuclear Power for AI Data Center Initiative
The UK government, under a Labour initiative aimed at fostering technological advancement and bolstering the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, plans to establish specialized zones for data center development. These 'AI Growth Zones' will feature expedited planning permissions and improved electricity access, as reported by Bloomberg. The first of these zones will be located in Culham, home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
A central element of this initiative is exploring nuclear energy as a power source for data centers, addressing the significant energy demands of advanced AI systems. The government will form an energy committee comprising public and private sector representatives to assess the potential of powering data centers with small modular reactors utilizing nuclear fission technology. This approach reflects the global push for sustainable energy solutions amid rising interest in AI.
